5 Super Simple Ways To Prevent Clogged Drains

It seems like a no-brainer, but clogged drains are one of the most common home plumbing issues. While you may not be able to forever prevent a clog, there are some very simple things you can do to minimize your susceptibility.

When it comes to kitchen sinks, keeping food away from your sink is a common sense solution. From left overs and scraps to coffee grinds, all solids (and mush) should be deposited directly into the trash. It’s also common for people to dump their hot grease down their sink– don’t do this! Leave it to cool on the side, put it in a container and then take it out to the trash.

When we look at bathroom clogs, hair and women’s sanitary items are common culprits. For hair, remember to keep your shower/bath drain covered, and consider a mesh screen or a perforated shower drain hair catcher if you know this is going to be a problem. (Bonus Tip: brush your hair before you shower to eliminate how much hair comes out when inside!)

Women’s sanitary items should never, ever be disposed of in your toilet. Use your trash can and save yourself a headache. Even dental floss should hit the trash can. The only thing your toilet is made for is human waste and toilet paper. But even still, consider the type of toilet paper you’re using and don’t believe the labels on flushable wipes. We find they cause many clogs.

We know this seems simple, but sometimes it just takes a gentle reminder and a small tweak to prevent the stress of a clogged drain. However, if you find yourself clogged anyway (which at times you still may) call 1-800-593-CLOG and we’ll head over and get you unclogged in no time.
